Useful Information | 04/11/2024 12:00

As the seasons change, so do the demands on your vehicle. Proper maintenance in the autumn and winter can prevent breakdowns and ensure your car performs safely and efficiently. Use this checklist to keep your vehicle in top shape during the colder months.

1. Tire Care

- Check Tire Tread Depth: Ensure the tread depth is at least 4/32" to maintain traction in wet or snowy conditions.
- Inspect Tire Pressure: Cold weather can reduce tire pressure. Check and adjust to manufacturer’s specifications.
- Examine Tire Condition: Look for signs of wear or damage, such as cracks, bulges, or punctures.

2. Battery Maintenance

- Test Battery: Cold weather can affect battery performance. Have your battery tested to ensure it holds a charge.
- Clean Battery Terminals: Remove any corrosion from battery terminals and cable connectors.

3. Fluid Levels

- Engine Oil: Check and, if necessary, switch to winter-grade oil for better engine performance in cold temperatures.
- Coolant/Antifreeze: Ensure the coolant mixture is appropriate for the season (usually a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water).
- Windshield Washer Fluid: Use a winter blend that won’t freeze and keep the reservoir full.

4. Heating and Defrosting

- Test Heaters: Make sure your car’s heaters are functioning properly for clear visibility and comfort.
- Check Air Filter: A clean air filter improves heater efficiency and air quality inside the car.

5. Wipers and Lights

- Inspect Wiper Blades: Replace blades if they are worn or damaged to ensure clear visibility during rain or snow.
- Top Up Washer Fluid: Ensure it’s the winter formula that can handle low temperatures.
- Check Exterior Lights: Verify that all lights are working and clean; this includes headlights, brake lights, and turn signals.

6. Brakes

- Inspect Brake Pads and Rotors: Have your brakes checked for wear and ensure they’re functioning properly for safety on slippery roads.
- Check Brake Fluid Level: Top off if needed and ensure there are no leaks.

 7. Emergency Kit

- Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include items such as a blanket, flashlight, batteries, first aid kit, non-perishable food, water, and a snow shovel.

8. Belts and Hoses

- Inspect Belts: Check for signs of wear or cracking on drive belts and replace them if needed.
- Examine Hoses: Ensure that hoses are not leaking or showing signs of deterioration.

9. Under Body Check

- Inspect for Rust and Damage: Look underneath the vehicle for signs of rust or damage that may have been caused by road salt or debris.

10. General Checks

- Check Exhaust System: Ensure there are no leaks or damage that could affect performance or safety.
- Review Owner’s Manual: Consult your car’s manual for any additional seasonal maintenance recommendations specific to your vehicle.

Proper seasonal maintenance helps ensure your vehicle runs smoothly and safely throughout autumn and winter. Use this checklist as a guide to prepare your car for the colder months and enjoy a worry-free driving experience.
